Does the phrase ‘baton passing’ ring a bell? If you are like me and have the habit of using a sporting analogy wherever possible, you would probably relate it to the Jamaican Relay team anchored by the great man ‘Usain Bolt’. It is understandable! Not often do you come across a team which has converted a relay race into ‘poetry in motion’. But let’s not get distracted. In this post, I wanted to share a simple yet effective technique in Knowledge Management.
Victor Newman, the former Chief Learning Officer of Pfizer is credited for the invention of the ‘Baton Passing Technique’. The technique was developed by mixing elements of mind-mapping, information ordering and visual layering with the focus on capturing lessons from the past. The technique was widely used in Pfizer to mitigate the risk of reinventing the wheel by transferring key lessons from teams which had successfully completed the product feasibility stage to teams who were about to start the process.
The technique is nowadays used for providing seekers the knowledge they need in the form that they can relate to i.e. in a form that they can use. The technique by no means should be interpreted as a tool that attempts to document everything. Baton Passing, as technique is most powerful when lessons that are intended to be replicated in the future are identified, broken down into a few concrete steps for making it happen and then linking them to an action plan.
